New layout engine: Behind the scenes?

Continuing the discussion from 2016.11.21 Week plan:

Why post this here?

I am posting this under show+tell seeing as, by the description: "Build something cool in Subform? Show off your process here"...this is quite possibly THE coolest thing one could build in Subform. And I'd love to see some of the process.

Purpose

After reading your 11.21 week plan and your thoughts on layout, I'm highly interested in how the new layout engine is shaping up. I know it may be far from demoing, but if there's any specific things you both are prototyping or building that you think could use a fresh perspective or want specific feedback on, you know you have a vested audience in all of us.

Can't say much yet, @rmion, though I'm glad you're excited = )

Haven't gotten to the point where we're designing Subform-in-Subform, since we're still working through possible conceptual models of layout and weighing their relative merits. The tools supporting that design work are pen, paper, and beer.
